The entire process of living in Zimbabwe is somewhat of a risk at the moment, so you could think that there would be little desire for visiting Zimbabwe’s casinos. Actually, it appears to be operating the opposite way around, with the atrocious market conditions creating a greater desire to bet, to attempt to locate a quick win, a way out of the crisis.
For almost all of the people subsisting on the tiny local earnings, there are two common types of betting, the state lotto and Zimbet. As with most everywhere else on the planet, there is a national lottery where the odds of succeeding are extremely small, but then the jackpots are also extremely big. It’s been said by market analysts who look at the situation that the lion’s share do not purchase a card with the rational assumption of winning. Zimbet is centered on either the domestic or the English soccer divisions and involves determining the outcomes of future games.
Zimbabwe’s casinos, on the other hand, pander to the very rich of the society and travelers. Up till recently, there was a very large sightseeing business, founded on safaris and visits to Victoria Falls. The market collapse and associated violence have carved into this market.
Amongst Zimbabwe’s casinos, there are 2 in the capital, Harare, the Carribea Bay Resort and Casino, which has five gaming tables and slot machines, and the Plumtree Casino, which has just the slot machine games. The Zambesi Valley Hotel and Entertainment Center in Kariba also has only slots. Mutare has the Monclair Hotel and Casino and the Leopard Rock Hotel and Casino, both of which contain table games, one armed bandits and video machines, and Victoria Falls houses the Elephant Hills Hotel and Casino and the Makasa Sun Hotel and Casino, both of which have slot machines and blackjack, roulette, and craps tables.
In addition to Zimbabwe’s casinos and the previously mentioned lottery and Zimbet (which is considerably like a pools system), there are also 2 horse racing complexes in the state: the Matabeleland Turf Club in Bulawayo (the 2nd municipality) and the Borrowdale Park in Harare.
Given that the economy has diminished by more than forty percent in recent years and with the associated deprivation and violence that has come about, it is not well-known how well the sightseeing business which is the backbone of Zimbabwe’s casinos will do in the in the years to come. How many of them will still be around till conditions get better is simply unknown.
